Antonio Diodato, known by his surname, was set to represent Italy in Eurovision 2020, and gave a spectacular performance in Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light. The Italian singer-songwriter won the 70th edition of the Sanremo Music Festival, where he competed with past Eurovision participants Francesco Gabbani (2017), and Raphael Gualazzi (2011). His song "Fai Rumore," off his latest album, Che Vita Meravigliosa, was an instant hit which also struck a chord with the Italian population, singing his song off their balconies during Italy's lockdown.

The Coronavirus and global pandemic hasn't stopped Diodato from creating new music. On May 22, 2020 he is releasing a new single titled, "Un'Altra Estate" (Another Summer). That's not all the artist has floating around. On May 8, 2020 Diodato won the category of Best Original Song at the David di Donatello Awards in Italy. The win, which is equivalent to an Oscar, was awarded to his song, "Che Vita Meravigliosa," off his album of the same name.

Representatives of Italy have yet to mention who will be participating in Eurovision 2021. Decisions about the Sanremo Music Festival being held in 2021 are still undecided. The directors are unsure if the festival will be held in early February, in a different venue, or if it will even happen at all. If Sanremo 2021 is cancelled, it could allow for Diodato to be internally selected, that's to say if he even decided to participate at all.
