International Women's Day 2020 | Celebrating women in Eurovision

Throughout the years in the Eurovision Song Contest, we've been lucky to have been shown some incredible talents and artists from all across Europe and even the entire world, and today on International Women's Day we're going to be taking a look at some of the leading ladies in the 2020 lineup, and female winners of the past decade.

The last decade of Eurovision was very triumphant for women in terms of participating in the contest and subsequently winning. Over 185 female acts have competed in the competition during the last decade, with 6 women winning overall.

In 2010, Lena Meyer-Landrut won for Germany in Oslo with the song "Satellite".

In 2011, Nikki Jamal won as part of the Azerbaijani duo Ell/Nikki with the song "Running Scared"

Loreen won for Sweden in 2012 with "Euphoria", which has become one of the most iconic Eurovision songs of all time.

In 2013, Danish singer Emmelie de Forest won with her song "Only Teardrops".

Jamala won for Ukraine in 2016 with the powerful ethnic ballad "1944".

Finally in 2018, Netta Barzilai won for Israel in Lisbon with "Toy".

In the 2020 edition of the contest set to be held in Rotterdam in May, over 20 women will be representing their countries as soloists and in groups. This makes up just about half of the total lineup this year, which is a huge step for both equality and empowerment.

Over the years we've seen women overcome and reach many milestones historically as well as the Eurovision Song Contest, and that's why International Women's Day is so important to recognise and celebrate women all over the world and what we've all achieved.
