Wales | Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion Will Represent Wales At The Eurovision Choir Of The Year 2019

The first edition of Eurovision Choir of the year took place in 2017. It was deemed such a sucess that it is back for a second time, and this year Wales will be represented by Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion who won the right to represent their homeland yesterday as they won the national final Côr Cymru 2019.

Yesterday, Wales hosted its second national final, that took place in Aberystwyth. It saw five acts compete for the honour of being the nations representative in Gothenburg, Sweden. The acts that competed were as follows:

  • Côr Sioe Ieuenctid Môn – Show Choir

  • Côr Ieuenctid Môn – Children’s Choir

  • Côr CF1 – Mixed Choir

  • John’s Boys – Equal Voice Choir

  • Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion – Youth Choir

It was an expert panel of international experts who decided that Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion would win last night's show. There was no public vote, just an expert panel. They were as follows:

  • Anna Wilczewska (Poland) – Conductor and choral tutor

  • Huw Humphreys (United Kingdom) – Head of music at the Barbican Centre, London

  • Karmina Šilec (Slovenia) – Musical Director from Slovenia and Fellow of Harvard University

Each of the choirs had twelve minutes to perform their songs. Each had to be varied, and contain atleast one song in Welsh, and no more than one in English. This reflected the previous entrants from 2017, Côr Merched Sir Gâr who also performed a similar programme.

This year has seen eleven countries confirm their participation to the contest. They are:

  • Belgium – RTBF

  • Denmark – DR

  • France – France Télévisions

  • Germany – WDR

  • Latvia – LTV

  • Norway – NRK

  • Scotland – BBC Alba

  • Slovenia – RTVSLO

  • Sweden – SVT

  • Switzerland – RTS

  • Wales – S4C

There are five debuts from France, Norway, Scotland. Sweden, and Switzerland. However, three countries, Austria, Estonia, and Hungary have withdrawn. Last time Wales placed second at the contest, losing out to Slovenia. Can they go one better this year, and win?
