Day 89 - Micky - "Enséñame a Cantar" For Spain 1977
It was the 70's in the land of Eurovision. A decade that would bring two Israeli wins, pop, and a touch of the bizarre. However, it was 1977, and Eurovision was in its 22nd year. It would be the sixth time that the United Kingdom would host, thanks to the Brotherhood of Man's win a year earlier. It was held at the Wembley Conference Centre on Saturday 7 May 1977, and hosted by Angela Rippon . This was the latest the contest had ever been held. In fact, from here on in, the month of May would be the home to Eurovision. Eighteen countries came to London, that saw Sweden return, and Yugoslavia withdraw. France won for a record breaking fifth time, but would not win the competition since. It has been 41 years since their last win. The newly imposed language rule was also brought back into the competition this year. However, the exception to the rule was Germany, and Belgium who had already selected their entries. It was the year that nearly saw Tunisia perform fourth, which would have happened until they pulled out shortly before the contest.
1977 saw Spain represented by Micky with his song, "Enséñame a Cantar". Considering it was the 1970's it was quite a unique performance that saw a backing singer blow into a tankard, and Micky dance, and serenade one his backing singers who was playing a banjo, with a dance that has not been seen on the stage since 1977. It was no winner, but it would come mid way in the table, and finish 9th. It would score 52 points. Even now this song is fondly remembered by fans. 10 countries would award it points, but it would be thanks to Belgium, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Germany that it would score as much as it did. These countries all awarded it 7 points each. Check out Mick's performance below:
Who Is Micky?
Micky or better known as Miguel Ángel Carreño Schmelter, was born in Madrid, Spain on the 20th October 1943. Before entering Eurovision the singer had quite a varied musical repertoire. It would be in 1962 that he would turn professional, and slowly start his rise to prominence. That year saw him lead a band, "Micky y Los Tonys". The band would prove to be quite successful having released over 30 singles, and five albums. During this time he also worked as a radio presenter, and even acted in a couple of films. This was nothing new of Spanish artists at the time. It would be the 70's that saw the singer go solo. It turned out he was just as successful as a solo artist. His first hits were "Soy así" and "El chico de la armónica". The song, "Bye Bye" in 1976 went international. It got air play in America where it impacted on the Billboard easy listening chart. It also, made an impact in Europe where it entered the charts in Luxembourg, Germany, and Netherlands. This would explain the "7 points" he would receive from two of these juries. The natural progression for Micky would be Eurovision. The rest they say is history.
What Happened After Eurovision?
His career would not end with Eurovision. He would continue with music, but the 1980's and 90's would see his career move more towards the medium of television and theatre. He would in fact act quite a lot in various TV programmes, and theatre productions. In 2003 he participated in the TV talent show "Viva Cantando". The 2000's also saw him drawn back to music where he would drop his latest album in 2010 called "La Cuenta Atrás". He has done several tours in the 90's, and even got the nickname "The rubber man" as a result of his movements, and dances on stage. After 1977 would see him release a further 8 singles, and 5 albums. On April 30, 2013 he r would receive a silver medal at the 2013 Showstars gala as a tribute to his career.
