Israel | Kobi Marimi will represent host nation Israel at Eurovision 2019
It was decided last night that 27 year old Kobi Marimi will sing for Israel at Eurovision 2019, to be hosted in Tel Aviv on May 18th 2019. After a competition spanning three months, Kobi was crowned the winner of national selection show 'HaKokhav HaBa L'Eurovizion'.
In last nights final, Kobi beat the already-famous Israeli singer Maya Buskila, who later finished 4th, in a duel. With the final three decided, Kobi then sung again against other finalists Shefita - who was the fresh surprise of the show - and Kitria, who was a frontrunner from her first audition.
Kobi's victory was a consensus when the judges and the public gave him the maximum amount of points and made him the successor of Netta. He finished with 215 points, whilst second place Kitria ended up with only 165 points and third place Shefita with 160 points. A record was also broken when over 1.5 million Israelis voted through the 'Mako' application. In the final, he performed Bon Jovi's 'Always' and also 'Let It Be' originally sung by The Beatles. Here's the moment the winner was decided:
Israeli minister of culture, Miri Regev (you may remember her from the bid for the hosting city), congratulated Kobi after the show:
"Kobi's voice made a huge impression on everyone in the country, he showed as all that the power of will can do everything after being eliminated, he returned in the "second chance" show and won the contest. I'm sure that he'll represent us with great success in the Eurovision."
"I'm shocked, and surprised and will do my best to represent Israel in the most honourable way as I can and try to make everyone proud", said Kobi after the victory. Check out his performance of Leonard Cohen's 'Halleulajah' below.
The song Kobi will be performing at the Eurovision Song Contest will be discovered next month.
