Cyprus | Tamta talks Eurovision - 'It is my honour to represent Cyprus'

January 1, 2019

On December 21st, Cypriot broadcaster CyBC announced that much-rumoured Georgian-Greek singer Tamta had been selected to represent the island nation at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, Israel with the song 'Replay'. She has now been featured in the latest edition of Cyprus's DownTown magazine with an exclusive interview - and thank you to our friends at INFE Cyprus we've been able to take a look at what Tamta has to say about her upcoming Eurovision experience, her career to date and also what she hopes to get out of Eurovision!

The interview, which you can read in full on the INFE Cyprus website here, tackled the big questions starting with how Tamta ended up being the Cypriot representative.

"Why did you decide to represent Cyprus this year at Eurovision? And, of course, how do you feel about it?"

"I feel excited, great joy and big responsibility. With Alex P. we worked together in 2015 on the song 'Unloved' and our collaboration was excellent. I know his job and I like it very much. I was excited to hear the song he had written for this year's Eurovision and I loved the result too! The song was the most important thing for me to say the final "yes"."

After last year's second place in Cyprus, do you feel there is extra pressure on you as everyone is really waiting for a first [place]?

"I have no expectations with regard to the final ranking. The whole group wants to make an appearance for which we will be proud! From now on, the audience and judges will judge the result ... Every year, it's different and you can not know what to do - different events, different contestants and totally different conditions. Moreover, the story has also been shown ... For example, we saw Sakis bringing a third place and the next year Paparizou will bring the first. A year after Helena, we saw Anna Vissi - for being one of the most important singers of Greece - to win the ninth place ... Inside the "game" is this! So the important thing is to be proud of what we will see and hear!"

"You come from Georgia, you grew up in Greece. Why with Cyprus on Eurovision?"

"One country gave birth to me and the other made my dreams a reality. For my heart, Greece and Cyprus are the same. There was no proposal from Greece, and at the same time Cyprus approached me for two consecutive chronologies - last year because of professional obligations it was not possible. Why not, then? I'm anxious to live the [Eurovision] experience, but it is my honour to represent Cyprus at Eurovision!"

"Have you already thought of your stage presence [for the Eurovision] stage knowing everyone bets that it will be impressive?"

"I have a lot of ideas! At the same time, I am very pleased to hear the ideas of creative team director Sacha Jean - Baptiste. We have not met yet ..."

Producer Alex P was also interviewed and was asked about how he feels being the producer and songwriter for Cyprus after the success of Eleni Foureira's 'Fuego'.

"I am honoured to, once again, I will be with such a talented team, for our Cyprus - this time for the Eurovision 2019. And obviously, it's amazing that we have with us both experienced and excellent star, Tamta. As you know, Eurovision is a big contest and we still have a lot of work and preparation to do next, but we are all united and committed to our goal as a team. I'm really excited! And I will do everything for the best possible, for Cyprus, in Tel Aviv next May."
