JESC 2018 | Meet Ela Mangion From Malta

This year a record breaking 20 countries will be taking part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Minsk, Belarus on the 25th November 2018. With around two weeks to go until the competition, Eurovoxx will introduce you to each artist, and give a little insight to the country they will be representing.

Who is Ela?

12 year old Ela was born on January 6th, 2006 and has been singing since she was a young girl. She is no stranger competition, having finished in second place at New Wave Junior in 2016 and winning the Euro Pop Contest in Berlin in 2017.

How was Ela chosen?

Maltese broadcaster PBS hosted a national final for Junior Eurovision 2018, (in which both the singer and the song were chosen), for the first time since 2010. Ela beat of 15 other singers to win the ticket to Minsk with her song "Marchin' On".

Ela's song was written by Emil Calleja Bayliss and composed by Cyprian Cassar, and it talks about the importance of standing strong and fighting through any problems life may throw at you.

Malta at The Junior Eurovision Song Contest:

Malta made their Junior Eurovision debut at the very first contest in Copenhagen in 2003, finishing in 7th place with Sarah Harrison and her song "Like A Star". Over the next seven years, Malta failed to replicate the success of their debut entry, with Daniel Testa and his song "Junior Swing" in 2008 being the only Maltese act to make the left side of the scoreboard, finishing in 4th place.

In 2011, due to a string of bad results, Malta withdrew from the contest. They came back in 2013 with Gaia Cauci and her song "The Start" which gave Malta their first win in any Eurovision event. Since then, they went on to achieve 4th place in 2014, another win in 2015 and 6th place in 2016. They even hosted the contest for the first time in 2014 and then again in 2016.

All the team at Eurovoxx would like to wish this young, talented singer a big ix-xorti t-tajba, good luck, in Minsk!
