Eurovision Asia | More details about Eurovision Asia revealed

Since it was revealed, only a few days ago, that Eurovision Asia is set to take place in Australia in December 2019, more details about the format and organisation of the contest have emerged.

In September 2018, the Events, Tourism and Governance department of the Gold Coast, (where the contest is rumoured to be held), met to discuss all things Eurovision Asia, as well as Australia Decides, their national final for Eurovision 2019.

Let's look at the topics that were discussed in the meeting regarding Eurovision Asia:

Organisation of Eurovision Asia

It was agreed that Blink TV, a comedy, entertainment and music based company, and Australian broadcaster SBS will hold the rights to The Eurovision Asia Song Contest from 2019-2031. The contest is expected to be held over 8 days, with a total of 16 countries participating. During the meeting, all persons present drafted a timeline for preparation of the contest:

  • October 2018 - partners and sponsors of the show will be announced

  • November 2018 - host city and venue announcement

  • May 2019 - all the participating countries, the theme of the contest and information on ticket sales will be revealed

  • June 2019 - the stage design will be revealed

  • July 2019 - the presenters of the show will be revealed

  • September 2019 - the final list of all competing artists and their songs will be announced

  • December 2019 - the red carpet and official welcome party will take place, alongside rehearsals and the live show

The host city

The Eurovision Asia Song Contest will be held in pre-determined cities each year between 2019 and 2031 on a rotation basis, one of which being the Gold Coast, which would potentially host the contest every four years until 2031. It is rumoured that the Gold Coast Convention Centre will be the venue for the 2019 contest.

Broadcasting

The show, which is expected to run for 3 hours, will be broadcast live in all of the participating countries. SBS have also announced that they will be broadcasting an additional 30 minute show each night, showing the preparations backstage and the rehearsals.

For everyone from non-competing countries, the show will be broadcast live online via the official YouTube pages for Eurovision Asia and The Eurovision Song Contest.

Participating countries

At the moment, there are discussions in place with China, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore and The United Arab Emirates about participation in the contest. It is unknown at present which other countries they are in discussions with. There are also discussions underway with artists from various Asian and Middle Eastern countries about their potential participation in the contest.

Voting

The voting will consist of 50% jury vote and 50% televoting and it is understood that it will replicate the Melodifestivalen-style of voting that has been in The Eurovision Song Contest since 2016.
