Bulgaria | Eurovision 2019 Withdrawal Confirmed

Following a tough weekend of speculation and rumours about BNT's cryptic social media posts suggesting that they may be withdrawing, the Head of Press for the Bulgarian delegation Vasil Ivanov has confirmed on Twitter that Bulgaria will not be participating at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv taking the confirmed amount of participating countries back down to 39.

In a tweet posted to the BNT Eurovision official twitter page, financial reasons are cited as being the reason for withdrawal - with the costs exceeding the financial capacity of BNT according to the broadcaster management.

This sad news follows three fantastic performances by Bulgaria following their return to the contest in 2016. In 2016, fan favourite Poli Genova took Bulgaria straight back to the final for the first time since 2007 with dance banger 'If Love Was A Crime', utlimately finishing fifth. The following year, young pop star Kristian Kostov got Bulgaria their best ever placement with 'Beautiful Mess' placing second behind winner Salvador Sobral of Portugal. Earlier this year, Bulgarian/American common framework supergroup Equinox performed 'Bones' to get Bulgaria their third consecutive final before finishing in fourteenth.

Bulgaria have really been delivering the past few years so having them withdraw from the contest is definitely a huge blow - however head of press Vasil Ivanov posted from his personal account that they will "return better and stronger". British media personality and co-host of the BBC's Eurovision 2018 commentary in Lisbon Rylan Clark is amongst those who has tweeted support to Vasil and his team. Hopefully we will see them back soon! With the current tally sat at 39, three countries who competed in 2018 are still to announce their participation; Moldova, Russia and San Marino.
