Number 1 | A countdown of Portugal's best at Eurovision
After counting down Eurovoxx's all-time favourite Portuguese Eurovision entries, it's now time to unveil our number one pick. We voted as our favourite the entry from 1994, "Chamar a música" by Sara Tavares.
"Chamar a música" was written by João Oliveira and telenovela writer, Rosa Lobato de Faria, who was also the lyricist for the Portuguese entries of 1992, 1995 and 1997.
The title of the song translates as "Call the music" and tells the story of a woman who will write a song for her lover that is just for the two of them.
Sara Taveres was left alone by her parents at a young age when they separated and went off in pursuit of a better life and was raised by an older Portuguese woman. She began to show her musical talents at a young age and in 1993 she won Chuva de Estrelas, the Portuguese version of Stars in Their Eyes, singing as Whitney Houston.
In 1994, at the age of just 16, she won Festival da Canção and the right to represent Portugal at Eurovision that year in Dublin.
"Chamar a música" became Portugal's 4th best placing entry at the time finishing in 8th place with 73 points, receiving douze points from Spain.
After Eurovision, Sara went on to perform more Jazz, Soul, African and World style music. She has released seven albums and has gained a strong following of amongst Jazz enthusiasts. In 2000, she won a Portuguese Golden Globe for Best Performer.
