Meet AWS from Hungary!

This year 43 countries will be present at this years Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Lisbon in May. With around two weeks to go until all of Europe descends on Portugal's capital, Eurovoxx will introduce you to each country that will be participating.

Who are AWS?

AWS are a Hungarian metal and post-hardcore (a punk-rock music genre) band from Budakeszi, Northern Hungary. They were formed in 2006 by Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Örs Siklósi, and Áron Veress. Since then, they have released numerous singles and albums as well as touring all over Europe and picking up the MTV award for "New Winning Band".

How were AWS chosen?

AWS were chosen through A Dal, Hungary's national selection show for Eurovision 2018. After sailing through the semi final, AWS beat off some tough competition from the 7 other final participants to win the ticket to Lisbon. They proved to be a popular choice with both the juries who voted in the first round of the final and the tele voters who voted in the second round of the final.

Hungary in The Eurovision Song Contest

Hungary made their debut in 1994 with an impressive 4th place by Friderika. It remains one of only 2 top 5 placings for Hungary, the other being 5th place in 2014 with András Kállay-Saunders. Since their debut, they have achieved a further 2 top ten placings, in 2007 and 2017.

In 1999, Hungary took a break from the contest, returning in 2005 with Nox and their song "Forogj, világ!" that made it to 12th place in the final.

Since the introduction of the semi final in 2004, Hungary have been present in the final every year except for 2008 and 2009 when they failed to qualify from the semi final and in 2006 and 2010 when they did not participate. From 2011, Hungary have managed to qualify every year since, giving them one of the best qualification records in Eurovision. Will AWS be able to continue on with this streak of qualification?
