Meet Franka from Croatia!

This year 43 countries will be present at this years Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Lisbon in May.  With around two weeks to go until all of Europe descends on Portugal's capital, Eurovoxx will introduce you to each country that will be participating. 

 

Who is Franka?

 

Franka Batelić, simply known as just Franka, was born on June 7 1992 in Rijeka, Croatia. Franka started singing at the age of 3, when she was a member of the Minicantanti Choir.

 

She rose to fame in 2007 when she won "Showtime", a popular Croatian show similar to shows like Pop Idol and X Factor. After the show, she was signed by Hit Records and released her debut single "Ovaj daj".

In 2008, her song "Ruža u kamenu" was chosen to represent Croatia at the OGAE Song Contest, which she ended up winning.

 

In 2009, took part in Croatia's national selection show for Eurovision with her song "Pjesma za kraj". She finished in 7th place with 18 points. Later on in 2009, she tried her hand at dancing with an appearance on "Ples sa zvijezdama", the Croatian version of Dancing With The Stars, which she ended up winning. After a break from the music scene, Franka returned in 2017 with her new single, "S tobom", which was a big hit in Croatia and neighbouring countries.

How was Franka chosen?

 

Franka was chosen to sing for Croatia at Eurovision 2018 via an internal selection. It was revealed in February 2018 that Croatian Broadcaster HRT had selected Franka for Eurovision 2018 with her song "Crazy". Her song was officially released in March 2018 with an accompanying music video.

 

Croatia in Eurovision:

 

Croatia made their debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 1993. However, they had previously participated in Eurovision a total of 10 times as part of Yugoslavia between 1961 and 1992, even winning the contest in 1989 with pop-rock band Riva and their song "Rock Me"

 

Since their participation as an independent nation, they have had a total of 23 participations, with 5 top ten placings. Their best results in the contest have come in 1996 and 1999 where they finished in 4th place and in 1998 when Danijela finished in 5th place with "Neka mi ne svane".

 

Since the introduction of the semi final in 2004, they have made it to the final on 7 out of 12 participations, with their best result coming in 2005 when Boris Novković made it to 11th place.
