Meet Jessica Mauboy from Australia!


This year 43 countries will be present at this years Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Lisbon in May. With around two weeks to go until all of Europe descends on Portugal's capital, Eurovoxx will introduce you to each country that will be participating.

Who is Jessica?

Jessica Mauboy was born on August 4 1989 in Darwin. Her big break came after her participation on Australian Idol in 2006 where she was the runner-up behind Damien Leith. Since then, she has become one of the most successful artists in Australia, with a string of hit singles and albums, selling over 2.5 million records, and racking up numerous awards along the way.


In 2010, Jessica ventured into acting when she made her on screen debut in the Australian film musical Bran Nue Dae, starring alongside Geoffrey Rush. She has since gone onto to appear in more films and television programmes.


In 2014, Jessica was invited to perform as a guest artist at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen. She performed the song "Sea of Flags" during the second semi final as part of the interval act. Since then, she has been busy acting and singing, including releasing her first soundtrack album, The Secret Daughter: Songs from the Original TV Series in 2016, followed by her second soundtrack album a year later.

How was Jessica chosen?

In December 2017, Australian broadcaster SBS internally selected Jessica to represent them at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon, making her the fourth Australian participant at Eurovision. Her song and official music video were released in March 2018.

Australia at The Eurovision Song Contest

After their guest appearance at Eurovision 2014 in Copenhagen, Australia were invited to take part at the Eurovision 2015 grand final in Vienna as a one-off to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Eurovision. Guy Sebastian had the honour of being the first Australian participant in Eurovision with his song "Tonight Again". finishing in 5th place. In 2016, the EBU made the decision to make Australia a permanent member of The Eurovision Song Contest and since then, they achieved second place in 2016, with Dami Im winning the jury vote and ninth place in 2017 with Isaiah Firebrace.
