Meet SuRie From The United Kingdom

This year 43 countries will be present at this years Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Lisbon in May. With around two weeks to go until all of Europe descends on Portugal's capital, Eurovoxx will introduce you to each country that will be participating.

Who Is She?

SuRie, whose real name is Susanna Marie Cork is no stranger to Eurovision. She first competed as Loic Nottet’s backup singer for his “Rhythm Inside” performance for Belgium in Vienna, Austia back in 2015 before returning as the musical director for Belgium’s Blanche last year for her song “City Lights” in Kiyv, Ukraine. Both entries respectfully earned Belgium 4th place in 2015 and 2017.

SuRie said the most interesting aspect of her entry “Storm” is “the dynamic range of the track” and how it “combines [her] love of piano-lead singer-songwriter storytelling and also a solid, soulful uplifting pop party!”.

While SuRie was initially trained classically, she can also play piano and oboe, as well as being a trained vocalist. In addition to her many talents, she also started writing as only 12 years old.

SuRie has held residencies in Jazz lounges across London. As well as her contributions to Eurovision in the past, she has also performed as a backing vocalist for the likes of Chris Martin and Will Young.

United Kingdom at Eurovision

The UK has competed in the Eurovision Song Contest a total of 60 times so far since it debuted back in 1956. They first appeared on the show a year later in 1957. They have since competed every year since 1959 after not partaking in 1958. The UK has since become one of the most successful countries in the contest. Alongside Sweden, the UK is one of the only two countries with Eurovision victories across 4 different decades.

As the UK is a part of the “Big 5”, along with Spain, France, Italy and Germany, they are given automatic entry into the Grand Final, not having to partake in the semis as they are the biggest contributors to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

The UK have won the contest a total of 5 times. Their first victory was by Sandie Shaw with the song “Puppet on a String” back in 1967, a decade after they first joined the contest. They also won the contest after they returned from their year break from the contest with Lulu and her song “Boom Bang-a-Bang” in 1969, which was the only year in Eurovision history where multiple countries won. In 1969, the UK came joint 1st with Spain, the Netherlands and France (France’s 4th win). The UK bagged yet another win 7 years later, in 1976 with Brotherhood of Man’s “Save Your Kisses for Me”. Bucks Fizz took the title for the UK’s 4th win in 1981 with their entry “Making Your Mind Up”. Finally, the last time the UK won the contest was back in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves’ “Love, Shine a Light”.
