Meet Mikolas Josef From The Czech Republic

This year 43 countries will be present at this years Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Lisbon in May. With around two weeks to go until all of Europe descends on Portugal's capital. Eurovoxx will introduce you to each country that will be participating.
Who Is He?
Mikolas Josef was born into a musical family in 1995. Both his parents are English teachers and Josef graduated from the English College in Prague. At only 5 years old, Josef began to learn to play the guitar. He went on to graduate from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art as a drama student. At only the age of 17, he was a professional model, modelling on runways for big brands such as Prada and Diesel. He later left that profession as he felt the industry was perceived dishonestly and superficially. Josef then decided to pursue a music career and began working as a street performer across Europe in cities such as Oslo and Vienna. He released his debut single “Hands Bloody” independently in 2015, then a year later released his single “Free”, which shot up to the Czech Republic’s top 20 music chart. His single “Believe (Hey Hey)” was released that same year.

How Was He chosen?
Mikolas was approached by the Czech Republic last year in 2017 with the song “My Turn”, which ended up being performed by Martina Barta. He rejected their offer as he felt as if the song didn’t suit him. However, he released his new single “Lie To Me”, before soon confirming he would compete with it in the Czech National Final. Mikolas went on to win the national selection, taking him on to represent his country in Lisbon in May 2018.

Czech Republic at Eurovision
Czech Republic haven’t made much of an appearance in the contest over the years. They first joined back in 2007 with Kabat’s “Mala Dama”. After receiving 0 points in 2009’s semi-final, the Czech broadcaster CT decided they would not be competing in 2010, and that they were to withdraw from the contest due to lack of interest from the Czech public. However, in 2014 they announced they were to return to the contest in 2015, with an internal selection being used to select their fourth entry. To date, Gabriela Gunčíková became the first and only Czech Republic entrant to reach the final, despite finishing 25th with her song “I Stand”. This year, however, high hopes surround Mikolas from across the globe as his entry “Lie To Me” has proven to be a hit with the general public and with juries and is expected to make it into the final.
