Ed Sheeran: I would like to write a UK song for Eurovision
One of the biggest British pop singers, Ed Sheeran, is up for writing a Eurovision entry for the United Kingdom in future; but he wouldn't perform it himself. "I would love to write a Eurovision song," he said. "I don't know that I'd ever enter it singing it. But I don't think the rest of Europe wants England to win because of history and stuff." The United Kingdom hasn't won Eurovision since 1997, when Katrina and The Waves bought the United Kingdom their fifth Eurovision win with "Love Shine A Light".
Ed is one of the most famous singers in the world at the moment. Sheeran broke through commercially in June 2011, when his debut single, "The A Team" debuted at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart. Buoyed by the chart success of his singles, "The A Team" and "Lego House", his debut album, + (plus) has been certified six times platinum in the United Kingdom. He has received 13 Grammy nominations and has won 4 of them. Sheeran's latest album ÷ (Divide) was a major hit around the world and was the best-selling album of 2017 in countries including Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. His single "Shape Of You" from his last album has reached more than 3 billion views in less than one year.
The United Kingdom In Eurovision:
The United Kingdom has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 60 times and is one of the most successful countries to compete in the contest. The UK has won Eurovision 5 times - 1967, 1969, 1976, 1981 and 1997.
From 1999 onwards, the UK has been a member of Big Five (Big Four from 1999-2010). As well as broadcasting the contest each year, the BBC also organises the selection process for their entry with a televised national final, "You Decide". The UK will be represented at this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon by Royal Academy of Music graduate SuRie with her song "Storm". SuRie has previously sang at Eurovision as a backing vocalist for Loïc Nottet in 2015 and Blanche in 2017.
