Söngvakeppnin Submissions Begin Now


The Icelandic National Broadcaster RÚV have recently revealed details of their up and coming national final Söngvakeppnin2018. The television show will decided which artist will be Svala's predecessor in Lisbon 2018. Details of the show, submission form and rules can be found here, on their official website.

Any persons wishing to submit a song, have up until 20th October 2017 to do so. It will then be up to RÚV to decide on their top 12 to perform at their national final, and be Iceland's next representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. As with most nations they will welcome all songs, regardless of how diverse they are.

Who Will Be Svala's Predecessor At Lisbon 2018?

What is interesting this year is that RÚV are trying to tempt more song writers and performers this by increasing the prize money for the winning song. It has increased from 1 million to 3 million Icelandic króna. After a string of disappointing results, the national broadcaster seem almost trying to entice the best that the country has to offer.

According to the broadcasters website there will be two semi-finals and a grand final. The two semi finals will be held on the 10th and 17th February 2018, and will comprise of 6 songs each. Three songs each from both semi finals, which will include a jury wildcard will proceed to the Grand Final to be held on March 3rd 2018. A total of 7 songs will perform at the Final.

The rules also state that songwriters must have Icelandic citizenship, or must permanently reside in Iceland. Foreign co-authors are allowed as long as the majority of the song is composed and written by an Icelandic native. Songs must be submitted, and perfomed in Icelandic for Söngvakeppnin2018 but can be changed to English or another language for the Eurovision Song Contest.
